An Australian online shop is set to become the first e-commerce site to accept bitcoin.
According to the Australian e-retailer e-Bike, it will accept bitcoin payments at its online shop on Saturday, July 8, according to the company’s website.
The company says the site is the first to accept the cryptocurrency and that it will offer its customers the opportunity to pay with bitcoins.
The online shop will also accept bitcoins as payment for shipping and insurance.
Australia has become a major centre for bitcoin trading as e-businesses have sprung up in recent years.
Last month, Australian eBike said it was set to begin accepting bitcoin payments.
E-bike has not released details of its plans for the site, which is expected to operate in Sydney.
Bitcoin was initially created in 2009 to facilitate the exchange of digital currency among users.
Since then, it has attracted a lot of attention for its potential to transform commerce, according the Financial Times.
Ebay is one of the world’s largest online retail stores and it offers online shopping and e-mail services to consumers.
It is a leader in online payments, having been acquired by PayPal in 2014.
