Lowes online shoppers in Australia in 2018 have gone down, with sales down 12% compared with last year, according to the latest figures from Nielsen.
The data shows that online shoppers are now more likely to purchase goods online than in stores.
The Nielsen online shopping industry report was released on Thursday and it showed that online sales fell by 12% from last year to a new low of $6.7 billion in the 12 months to April.
Sales of goods online fell 5.5% to $3.5 billion.
“We expect that online retail will be down for several years as the trend towards more efficient shopping and more convenient delivery continues to take hold,” Nielsen chairman and CEO Chris Wills said in a statement.
Lowes chief executive Ian Macfarlane said online sales are down for a number of reasons.
“There is more of a focus on e-commerce,” he said.
“It’s less of a place to buy.
We’ve also seen a change in our shopping environment where people are buying online from places like Amazon.com, as opposed to brick and mortar retailers like Lowes, which has been more about being in the home or in a big city.”
Online shoppers have become more aware of their online shopping habits, and they are less likely to buy at the local Lowe’s or Home Depot.
“Online shopping in 2018 has not been as successful as it was in the past,” Mr Macfaddin said.
However, Mr MacFarlane also said Lowe’s and Home Depot are “not going to be knocked out of the market anytime soon”.
“They’re still going to offer their products and we’ll see where the rest of the industry goes from here,” he added.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is currently investigating the matter.
